Day 1
Arrival

On arrival at Heathrow airport, a private transfer will take you to the Macdonald Windsor Hotel, our hotel for the duration of our stay. In the evening you are invited to join the group for a welcome drink, followed by dinner.

Day 2
Windsor, Windsor Castle and The Savill Garden

After breakfast, we enjoy a guided walking tour of Windsor. This ancient royal town has a rich heritage dating back over 1,000 years with many beautiful buildings, cobbled streets and a glorious riverside setting.

After our tour, we visit Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and one of the Queen’s official residences. Established in the 11th century by William the Conqueror, it has been remodelled by successive kings and queens and is regularly used for ceremonial and State occasions. The magnificent State Apartments are furnished with some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection while St George’s Chapel is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England.

We then head to The Savill Garden, one of the finest royal gardens within Windsor Great Park. Created in the late 1930s by Sir Eric Savill, the 35 acres of interconnecting gardens and exotic woodland are designed for year-round interest and colour. We have lunch with the Head Gardener who gives us an insight into the gardens and is on hand to answer any horticultural questions.

Back at the hotel this evening, we enjoy a fascinating after-dinner talk by a guest speaker

Day 3
Highclere Castle and Henley-on-Thames

We journey to the world-famous Highclere Castle, residence of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and filming location for the much loved Downton Abbey television series. Entrance includes access to the Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars of the castle, which explores the achievements of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen in 1922.

We continue on to the beautiful riverside town of Henley-on-Thames, famous for its rowing regatta. Several of Henley’s buildings are designated ‘of special architectural or historical interest’ including St Mary’s Church, the Town Hall, Market Place and the 18th-century stone bridge.

The evening is left free to make your own dinner arrangements.

Day 4
Kew Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew need little introduction and are rightly renowned the world over. Founded in 1759 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, Kew Gardens has one of the most comprehensive plant collections in the world and is also an important botanical research centre. We explore more on our guided garden tour. Highlights of the 300 acres of inspirational gardens and landscapes include the famous Palm House and the Treetop Walkway that opened in 2008.

The evening is free for you to make your own dinner arrangements.

Day 5
Chenies Manor House and Waddesdon Manor

Chenies Manor House is an enchanting Tudor manor house with fortified tower and stepped gables. Originally the home of the Russell family, the manor was bought in the 1950s by the present owners, the MacLeod Matthews family, who take us on a guided tour of their enchanting property. Winner of the HHA/Christie's Garden of the Year Award 2009, the gardens are divided into a series of compartments, including a sunken garden, a parterre with a yew maze and a Victorian kitchen garden.

From here, we travel to Waddesdon Manor. Built by the wealthy Rothschild family, Waddesdon is a renaissance-style chateau that looks as though it’s been transported to the gentle Buckinghamshire countryside from France’s Loire Valley. Along with a guided tour of the sumptuous interiors, we also enjoy lunch here, followed by a guided tour of the cellars and a wine tasting session.

The evening is left free to make your own dinner arrangements.

Day 6
Hampton Court Palace and Richmond Park

We travel first to Hampton Court Palace, former royal residence of Henry VIII. Our guided tour brings the tales of the palace to life as we discover the State Rooms, the Great Hall (England’s last and greatest medieval hall), the vast Tudor kitchens and the Chapel Royal with its sumptuous ceiling decoration. Our tour continues into the formal gardens which cover over 60 acres. Highlights here include the Great Vine planted by ‘Capability’ Brown in 1768, and the Hampton Court Palace Maze which consists of half a mile of winding paths surrounded by towering yew tree walls.

Afterwards we visit Richmond Park, the largest of London’s eight Royal parks and the biggest enclosed space in London. Designated a National Nature Reserve, the park has a varied landscape of hills, woodland gardens and grasslands set among ancient trees plus plenty of wildlife including herds of red and fallow deer.

Back at the hotel we enjoy dinner together.

Day 7
Wakehurst Place and Polesden Lacey

We start the day at Wakehurst Place, the country estate of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Not only is it famed for its beautiful botanic gardens, tree collections, and its science-based plant conservation and research, but the unrestored mansion is a fine example of Elizabethan style.

Next stop is Polesden Lacey. Described as a ‘delicious house’ by the Queen Mother on her honeymoon there, the magnificent estate boasts wonderful views across the rolling Surrey Hills. This peaceful countryside retreat is most closely connected to Dame Margaret Greville who entertained royalty and the celebrities of her time with lavish parties at the manor, which remains home to her extensive collection of art and ceramics. We also have time to wander the beautiful gardens that are a delight to explore all year round.

Back at the hotel this evening, we enjoy a farewell dinner together.
